WANDERERS have handed a short-term contract to ex-West Ham, Middlesbrough and Bristol City midfielder Gary O’Neil.

Pending registration, the 35-year-old will be added to the squad travelling to West Brom for the Championship opener tomorrow after a successful trial in the summer.

O’Neil has nearly 500 career appearances and has turned out in four of Wanderers’ pre-season friendlies.

He left Bristol City in the summer having played 36 games in two seasons, scoring one goal, but his game time at Ashton Gate was limited last season because of injuries.

“We felt Gary would give us a bit of cover in the midfield positions,” said Wanderers boss Phil Parkinson. “He’s experienced and a great character to have around, particularly for the younger players, so it made sense to give him a contract until January.”

O'Neil told the Wanderers website he was looking forward to making an impact at the club.

"I'm really pleased to be on board and I just can't wait to get started.

"I've really enjoyed my time at the club so far this summer - they're a really good bunch of lads and we've got some great work done which is the main thing.

"Now though is when it matters and I'm ready to help however I can."
