WANDERERS (3-5-2).

NATHAN BAXTER…7.

Heart in mouth moment when he went down injured in the first half. Came to his side’s aid with a huge save from Cole but distribution could be improved.

EOIN TOAL…6.

It was sloppy for the goal, no question. His defending was better after that and certainly looked more assured when he moved into the middle.

CALEB TAYLOR…6.5.

Quite a task dropping into the middle of the back three on a couple of days’ notice but he coped well, won plenty of duels and succumbed to cramp later on.

JACK IREDALE…6.

Had a couple of decent headed chances that he should probably have buried. Saw plenty of possession – twice as much as any Barnsley player, in fact.

JOSH DACRES-COGLEY…6.5.

Semi-culpable for the opening goal after dropping off Phillips but atoned for it with some decent runs from wing-back. Also effective going into the middle later on.

PARIS MAGHOMA…5.5.

The wait to see the Maghoma of old goes on. He’s definitely in there – but the incision we saw earlier in the season has been absent of late.

JOSH SHEEHAN…5.5.

Heavily leaned upon in that midfield pivot role, given some risky passes around his own box and kicked from pillar to post. Better than this, though.

KYLE DEMPSEY…6.5.

Lost his marker for the opener but was very lively otherwise, definitely Bolton’s most effective attacking player for the opening hour.

ZAC ASHWORTH…7.5.

Great finish for the goal – and leaving that aside he showed a maturity of performance, bouncing back after the Blackpool disappointment.

VICTOR ADEBOYEJO…5.

Unlucky at times where the odd bounce or pass did not go his way but he needs to keep the ball better than he did against Barnsley.

DION CHARLES…5.

That waspishness is still there but when the ball came firing across the penalty box he was strangely absent. Could have helped himself in the first half.

Subs: Collins 7, 63 (for Charles) – An assist and nearly the winner. Good signs.

Bodvarsson 6.5, 63 (for Adeboyejo) – An assured touch which gave Bolton a chance to build.

Ramsay 6, 68 (for Taylor) – Whipped in one superb ball from the right.

Morley 74 (for Sheehan).

Not used: Mendes Gomes, Ogbeta, Jerome.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Zac Ashworth.

Showed great character to shrug off the penalty miss at Blackpool and put in such a ballsy performance against a promotion rival.

MOAN OF THE MATCH – The defending for the opening goal was positively statuesque. Six Bolton players did little to stop Cole getting a tap in.

MAGIC MOMENT – Collins collects the ball on the right touches once to set himself and then drifts a brilliant ball for Ashworth. That’s where the money went.

Barnsley (3-4-1-2): Roberts; Williams, de Gevigney, Earl; Connell; Cotter, Phillips, Kane, Cadden; Cole, McAtee.

Subs: O’Keefe 68 (for Cotter), Grant 81 (for Kane).

Not used: Russell, Pines, Cosgrove, Killip, Watters.

Referee - Leigh Doughty 5/10.

Let too much slide in the first half. McAtee should have been cautioned long before he was, and Iredale should definitely have gone into the book too. A few real head-scratching decisions.
