For the first time in 23 years, Atherton LR will take on a play-off task when they host South Liverpool in the NWCFL First Division North semi-final at Crilly Park tomorrow (3pm).

And Dave Jones’ men will, hope to take heart from a win against the same opposition back in January when goals from Connor Ikin and Cal Hunter secured three points.

Despite ending their season with a disappointing defeat at Bacup Borough, LR will look to utilise all they have got to finish what has already been a very successful season goals-wise with a shot at promotion.

The Merseysiders, despite confirming their third-place finish on the final day, have made no secret of how good they can perform on the road following their convincing 4-1 win against AFC Blackpool this month.

Previewing the game, the LR boss described his disappointment with the league finale, but also how well the squad prepared.

Jones said: “Other teams have had a full week to prepare and we didn’t quite have that luck, so it’s important we utilised the squad as much as we could.”

Jones also showed his appreciation to club physio Ryan Appleton who has worked hard to get as many of the squad fit for action this weekend.

Jones added: “Ryan has been absolutely outstanding, it’s been a busy week for him.

“You couldn’t ask for better staff for the football club, I really do hope that we’re right in it Saturday and I think we will be.

“We will just give the best account of ourselves that we can.

“It is a difficult game against a very strong South Liverpool side, but I said to the players, it’s something to look forward to.

“The home attendances have gone through the roof over the last few weeks, so we’re hoping people are coming down again and as I always say, bring a mate down.

“It’s a really exciting game for the town, we need them behind the lads.

“Fans have got a team they should be really proud of - a team full of players willing to give everything for the badge week in and week out.”

The other semi-final sees Ashton Town host Euxton Villa, with the winners of each due to meet on Saturday, April 27.

The finalist with the highest-placed finish in the regular league season will benefit from home advantage.
