THERE proved no transfer deadline drama at the Reebok yesterday — but defender Gary Cahill insists Wanderers can be happy with their lot.

Owen Coyle resisted the urge to add any permanent signings to his three loan acquisitions of the January window but loaned out four of his younger players, including the fit-again Ricardo Vaz Te, who has joined Scottish Premier League side St Johnstone.

Jack Wilshere, Vladimir Weiss and Stuart Holden have joined the club since Coyle’s arrival three weeks ago, and Cahill believes all three can have a major impact on the Whites’ battle for survival.

“They bring a lot of flair,” he said of the trio. “We have got a lot of players who are hard-working and physical but they bring a different element.

“They are nice on the eye, get at players and are tricky and skilful.

“Hopefully now you’ll see a good mixture of the big physical type and the skilful wingers. He’s made it clear he likes his wingers – those who can go out and express themselves, get on the ball and take players on, and they definitely fall into that category.”

Both Wilshere and Weiss boast limited Premier League experience, and have arrived at the Reebok from Arsenal and Manchester City to continue their footballing education.

And Cahill – who spent the formative years of his own career on loan at Burnley and Sheffield United – has urged them both to seize their chances, if and when it arrives.

“You’ve got to out there with as much confidence as you can,” he said.

“They are both two young lads, but both experienced, in that they have played games before.

“It’s not a matter of sink or swim, but when you get that opportunity, you have to take it.”

A thigh injury ruled US international Holden out of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, but he remains hopeful of a full return to training early this week.

Cahill is also looking forward to running the rule over the midfield playmaker, who has signed a short-term deal from MLS side Houston Dynamo to gain first team experience before this summer’s World Cup finals.

“We haven’t seen that much of him either, to be honest, because he picked up a little injury,” he said.

“But he’s another one who likes to play football, so hopefully he’ll be a hit for us.”

Teenage centre-back Mark Connolly followed Vaz Te to Scotland, joining Hamilton on loan for the rest of the season while reserve team striker Tope Obadeyi has joined join League Two leaders Rochdale, also for the remainder of the season.

Coyle has also allowed young striker Danny Ward to extend his loan at League One Swindon Town until the end of the season.

A much-mooted move for centre-half Danny Shittu never materialised, however, despite late reported interest from Glasgow Rangers.
