OWEN Coyle suffered a miserable return to his former club as Burnley dumped Wanderers out of the Carling Cup.

Insults rained down from the terraces as Wade Elliott’s 45th-minute strike sent the Clarets through to the fourth round.

Referee Mark Clattenburg initially disallowed the goal after Elliott turned in Chris Eagles’ cross but changed his mind after consulting his assistant.

Coyle was back at Turf Moor for the first time since joining Bolton in January.

And Burnley fans left him in no doubt that they hadn’t forgiven him for leaving as boos and cries of “Judas” rang around the ground.

Eagles and Jay Rodriguez both rattled the woodwork before Elliot put Burnley in front on the stroke of half time.

Wanderers, who had made eight changes to the side which started at Aston Villa on Saturday, rallied after the break and Ivan Klasnic forced a good save from Lee Grant before Tamir Cohen wasted a superb chance to equalise on 62 minutes.

Burnley sub Steven Thompson should have wrapped up the tie but dragged his shot badly across goal with only Adam Bogdan to beat.

There was still time for Cohen to flash a header over the bar and Grant to beat out Matt Taylor's injury-time free kick but it would have been scarcely deserved on a night which belonged firmly to Coyle’s former employees.
