OWEN Coyle has revealed he plans to open talks with Johan Elmander about a new contract to keep him at the Reebok.

The Wanderers star grabbed his fourth goal of the season in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at high-flying West Brom .

The club-record signing is out of contract at the end of the season – and could leave for nothing.

But Coyle is confident Elmander – who credited his manager with saving his career last week – will pledge his future to the club after Bolton kept faith with him after a torrid first two years in England.

The Swede is finally beginning to show the form that convinced Wanderers to splash £8.2million on the former Toulouse striker in 2008.

His clinical finish at the Hawthorns was his fourth goal in seven Premier League games this season – one more than he managed in the league in the whole of last season. Coyle is eager to keep the 29-year-old at the club – and gave his clearest indication yet that he will be offered a new deal.

“We’ll sit down with him and he knows that,” said the Wanderers boss. “I can’t say it’ll be today or tomorrow but he knows I want him at the football club.

“He’s got everything in his locker to be a top player. The very best.

“He’s got great mental strength because he’s been panned from pillar to post because he came in with a big transfer fee.

“But I’ve shown the belief I’ve had in him by playing him week in, week out.

“He knows how much I think of him and I’m flattered that he’s said is how much he enjoys working with me.”

Coyle also called for Kevin Davies to be included in Fabio Capello’s latest England squad.

The Italian announces his team today for next Tuesday’s Euro Qualifier with Montenegro – and the Scot insists the Wanderers captain should be in it.

He said: “I don’t pick England squads and, maybe at 33, they think he’s too old but he’d be a breath of fresh air and something completely different dimension to the play.”
