BOLTON boxer Luke Blackledge won the Commonwealth super middleweight title on Saturday night and is now targeting a world title fight.

The victory – the most prestigious ever won by a Bolton-trained boxer, believes his coach – came with a unanimous points decision victory over Liam Cameron at King George's Hall in Blackburn.

Blackledge, who fights out of Elite Gym in Halliwell, invested his own money into taking the fight.

The 24-year-old from Clitheroe, who moved to the Bolton gym to further his career, is now looking for potential world title fights after lifting a belt his trainer believes could be the best ever won by a fighter produced by a Bolton club.

"He beat a top fighter in Liam Cameron," said Alex Matvienko.

"This title has been held by people like Carl Froch and Luke took this fight as a gamble.

"He actually put some of his own money into it, along with local sponsors.

"It was a gamble but it's such a prestigious title that he couldn't let it pass by.

"Luke Cameron has one of the best jabs in boxing and Luke out-jabbed the jabber.

"I don't think we have ever had a champion of such a prestigious title from Bolton before – someone who came through a Bolton gym and been produced in Bolton.

"I might be wrong but I don't think so. It would be good to know a bit more about the history of boxing in Bolton."
