EDGWORTH found runs hard to come by on the opening week of the Greater Manchester League season, but they had no problems on that score on Saturday.

They mustered just 87 against Woodhouses nine days ago, albeit it should be noted that Woodhouses also restricted Unsworth to 74 all out on Saturday as they successfully protected 92.

Against Worsley, Edgworth had a field day with the bat, scoring 316-6.

Worsley had also been well beaten on the first day of the season by Denton so it is debatable how much Edgworth should read into this victory in terms of their promotion challenge.

But a 168-run victory should also provide them with a huge confidence boost after the disappointment of their first match.

Opener Jamie Smith racked up 88, but it was the pro Clyde Fortuin, who came in at number three, that shone the most with 104, while number four Brett Ernst chipped in with 28 as Edgworth took the game away from Worsley early on.

Chris King, Liam Watkinson and Rob Bancroft all shared the honours with the ball with three wickets apiece as Edgworth whittled out the home side in 29.5 overs.

Egerton suffered their second defeat in the opening two games of the Premier Division when they lost by two wickets at home to Roe Green.

The reigning champions posted 180-7, which the visitors passed with five balls to spare.

Matt Parkinson top scored for the Bolton side with 36 and his team-mate Scott Martin took 4-50 as Roe Green got got over the line, mainly thanks to Oliver McMahon’s unbeaten 76.

In Division Two, Astley and Tyldesley followed up their disappointing opening-day 53-run defeat at Brooksbottom with an encouraging seven-wicket victory at Prestwich second XI.

The home side’s 202-9 from their 50 overs looked a challenging target but the Gin Pit men made short work of it.

Opener Nathan Moore stayed in throughout the 36 overs it took to win the game, amassing 78 runs along the way.

And he was ably supported by David Harrison, who hit 73 before he was out shortly before the end.

Jordan O’Malley had the best bowling figures for A&T with 4-52.
