DAISY Hill veteran Mike Chilton has warned fellow Bolton League sides not to underestimate Tonge this year.

The two sides locked horns at the weekend despite the Tonge Moor outfit only fielding 10 men.

Sam Pendlebury (23), Chilton (26) and Imtiaz Cheema (27) all hit decent knocks as the St James' Street side were bowled out for 166.

Cameron Lucas (6-43) and Connor Lord (3-40) did the damage with the ball.

Tonge professional Tilaksha Malshan responded with a strong score of 55 but with little back-up his side were dismissed for 112 thanks to the bowling of Adnan Raees (5-33) and Neil Tong (3-55).

Without skipper Steve Chilton Daisy secured their second win of the season by 54 runs, much to the delight of twin brother Mike.

“We got off to a good start and batted really well, which was important,” Mike Chilton said. “It was sensible batting. Considering they only had 10 men they fielded very well.

“To be honest I was very impressed with Tonge. It was the first time I’ve ever faced them but they were much better than I anticipated.

“One thing I would say is don’t underestimate Tonge because they look a very good team.”

Over Chilton’s 22-year service with Daisy, the batsman has seen many clubs come and go throughout the league.

But the new format has brought a breath of fresh air – one Chilton is confident will enhance the latter part of the season.

He added: “Everyone at Daisy Hill is very happy with the new league format. We are concentrating on the league this year and going for the title.

“Over the past years in the Bolton Association we have found ourselves in mid-table and out of the cups and had nothing to play for late on in the season.

“Now I expect it will be more exciting and will get everybody up for it all the way through the season.”

Elsewhere, Adlington rose to the top of the table with a convincing 92-run win at Golborne.

Simon Trim set the standard for the Huyton Park side as he opened with a score of 28.

Iain Critchley followed suit with a sweet 64, before professional Majeed whacked 90 off only 64 deliveries, setting Adlington on their way to a total of 228-5.

Lewis Clarke took 4-65 with the ball.

Golborne’s reply was tame in comparison, achieving only 136 before they were bowled out by some magical Majeed bowling.

The all-rounder produced figures of 6-49 when he turned his hand to the ball and Jack Shovelton took the remaining four wickets for 44 runs.

Muhammad Adeel Baig bowled a six-wicket haul as Atherton eased past Darcy Lever.

Ian Nuttall and Josh Gilluley swept up the remaining wickets as Darcy were bowled out for 86 – Chris Fenn top scored with the bat, hitting 32.

The reply lasted no more than 14 overs as openers David Tantsis-Hall (39 not out) and Callum Barlow (31no) drove home Atherton’s 10-wicket win.

Joe Pryle (80) and Thushendra De Zoysa (72) starred with the bat as Blackrod hosted Little Hulton.

The Vicarage Road side posted an impressive 227-1 in the first innings. A score high enough to deflate most sides, but not Little Hulton, who were inspired by Fida Hussain’s 106 not out to record a memorable fightback to reach a rain-reduced target of 220 with three wickets to spare.
