JOE Leeming took a remarkable five wickets in five balls – all clean bowled –for Daisy Hill in the Bolton League's Birtwistle Cup competition for second teams.

The 16-year-old spin bowler produced his remarkable over to roll out Blackrod for just 48, a target the home side passed in just 10 overs to move into the first round proper.

The student, who has been at Daisy Hill for nine years, ended with stunning figures of 6-10 off three overs.

And he was not finished with cricket when the winning run was scored – with him at the crease and one not out – as he got the call to go and help the first team in their Hamer Cup tie at Blackrod.

First-team captain Steven Chilton explained: "Our opening batsman Rick Farnworth pulled up making a run and had to retire injured, so we called on Joe to come and field for us in the second innings.

"He fielded like a legend as well, nothing got past him so all in all it was an amazing day for him."

Daisy Hill's second-team game lasted just 27 overs and saw them win through the preliminary round stage along with Westhoughton, Eagley and Tonge on Sunday.

Eagley recovered well from 9-2 as they chased an Atherton score of 160, thanks to a stand of 118 between Tom Mitchell (63) and Jack Phillips (53) on the way to a five-wicket win.

Earlier, Matt Lilley (51) and Mike Tomlinson (38) had been mainly responsible for posting a total of 160 all out as Jon Birchall bowled a miserly spell of 3-4 in his eight overs.

Westhoughton chased down a Little Hulton score of 169 with five wickets and six overs to spare, thanks in the main to an unbroken stand of 83 between Niall Dunn (59no) and James Burrow (32no).

Almost everyone chipped during the Little Hulton innings, with 38 by Neil Jarvis and 30 from Rory McIntyre the main contributions with three wickets each for Mason McKenna and Arun Pindoria.

Tonge edged out Kearsley in a low-scoring game at Castle Hill by just 15 runs.

Batting first they struggled to reach 122 all out as Neil Thompson took 3-30 with 42 extras proving crucial in the end.

Tonge were just as wasteful giving Kearsley 44 extras back but none of the batsmen could capitalise apart from Fearnley Davies and Steven Pellowe in a stand of 52.

Cory Schofield took 4-17 and Danny Holt 3-17 as Kearsley mustered 107 in reply.

In the previous day's second-team league games Farnworth Social Circle, Astley Bridge and Bradshaw made it two wins out of two in the top division, and Eagley and Lostock did the same in the second tier.

Social outplayed Kearsley to record a 242-run win at Springfield Road.

They rattled along at almost seven an over to post a total of 302-7, led by Jamie Bohannon and Michael Daley who each made 57, Andrew Brooks (41) and Conor Thompson (31).

Kearsley must have been demoralised by this as they then collapsed to 60, despite Jordan Thornley making 29 as Brooks finished off a good day with 6-18.

Bridge had a comfortable 91-run win against Farnworth at Bridgeman Park.

Steady batting by their middle order led by Mehr Khan's 31 helped them reach 144 all out as Abdullah Ishaq claimed 5-33.

Farnworth's reply was blown away as Khan completed a good day with 5-31, and Paresh Patel with 4-15 hustled them out for just 44.

Bradshaw's win was closer as they edged home by just two wickets in a low-scoring game with Little Hulton.

Ian Ross bowled superbly to take 7-17 as Little Hulton struggled to reach 65 all out, despite 29 from Rory McIntyre.

Bradshaw did not find it any easier as they slumped to 36-6 before Daisy Mullen helped shepherd them to a narrow win.

Another close game saw Horwich RMI beat Westhoughton by four wickets.

Chasing 102 to win, they were grateful for 23 from Jacob Swindells and 25 not out from Adam Knowles as Mason McKenna was again among the wickets, taking 4-30.

Knowles was also effective with the ball, taking 3-16 to back up Andy Taylor's 4-25 as Westhoughton were bowled out for 101, with Seb Miller top scoring on 19.

Darcy Lever romped to a nine-wicket victory over Heaton as they used just 14 overs to pass their target of 128, Shakeel Khan smashing an unbeaten 72 off just 40 balls.

Heaton had appeared well placed on 104-3 but then lost their last seven wickets for 23 runs as Bilal Khan took 6-54 and Toseef Hanif 4-15.

The main resistance came from Robin Isted (22) and Jig Varsani (28).

Eagley kept up their good start to the season with a 64-run victory over Little Lever at home.

Batting first, Dave Shuttleworth (47) and Jon Birchall (44) helped them to a total of 180-9 despite Matthew Mills taking 3-30.

Little Lever lost wickets regularly with all the bowlers chipping in and struggled to 116 in reply as only Jack Barlow with 22 made much progress with the bat.

Lostock kept pace with Eagley with a 60-run win at Adlington.

Stephen Kaye (30) and Sam Barlow (25) got them off to a decent start before Zak Green took out the middle order with 3-27.

Darren Parr then hit a breezy 24 to help his side to 157 all out.

In reply, Adlington lost a couple of early wickets before Eddie Haddon (27) and Leon Morris (21) steadied the innings.

However, the introduction of Asghar Ali changed the course of the innings as he grabbed 5-15 to help dismiss them for 97.

Daisy Hill have also won two out of two after a battling three-wicket victory over Walkden.

Chasing 181 to win they were indebted to the Kennys – Warren, who made 59, and Stephen (30) as they reached their target with six overs to spare despite Adam Newton taking 4-54.

Newton had earlier top scored with 64 as Walkden posted 180 all out, with Kash Lalji and Mo Razzaq providing good support as Nathan Blair took 4-58 for Daisy Hill.

Tonge batted first at Blackrod and struggled to 116 all out despite Cory Schofield making an undefeated 36 as Stephen Glover took 4-53.

Blackrod lost early wickets but a steady unbeaten 33 from Will Powell saw them home by five wickets.

Golborne and Atherton fought out a close game at Simpsons Fields before the latter finally got home with three wickets to spare.

Chasing 140 to win they found themselves 72-5 before Dave Nolan (30 not out), Mike Tomlinson and Matt Nolan turned the game their way.

Earlier, a run-a-ball 59 by Muhammed Saqib got Golborne off to a breezy start, but only Brett Houghton (22) of the rest was able to make much impact in a total of 139-7.
