AFTER the recent success of Bolton’s junior Youth Development League athletes, it was the turn of some of Bolton United Harriers and Athletic Club's more senior members to shine at the Northern Masters Track and Field Championships.

Held since 1968 on the tracks all over the North of England (previously as the Northern Veterans’ T&F), the meeting at Leigh saw three BUH&AC coaches impress.

Cathy Flitcroft tackled the 1500 metres in blustery conditions. Her swift 5:24.5 not only set a new personal best on the way to gold, but also shattered the 10-year-old championship record and elevated her to seventh in the F50 UK rankings.

She followed this victory an hour later by also picking up gold in the 800m (2:44.0) to set her second PB of the day.

Ilse Hemming competed in the F55 category and had a superb four-medal haul of gold in the triple jump (7.21m), silver in the 100m (16secs) and long jump (3.59m), and bronze in the 200m (34.9).

Senior sprint coach Allen Parkinson (M60) won gold in the 100m (14.50), followed by another gold in the triple jump with 9.04m into a head wind.

Elsewhere, the gruelling Hillrunner Bolton Hill Marathon saw Andrew Doyle finish the 26.2 miles in 10th of a field of 191.

His time of 3:36:58 also made him first M45.

John Grimshaw’s 50:02 (92nd) and Ged Tucker’s 59:14 (165th) were among the Morecambe 10k field of 218.

Tommy Harrison (24:55) collected bronze in the second of the Astley Park 4.4-mile trail race series, while Ken Fowler (29:55) was first M60 of the 105 field.

Paul Turner recorded 19:54 for 57th place in the Bowden 5k at Altrincham.
