EAGLEY put their relegation woes behind them with a fundraising event, with nine matches providing the day's entertainment.

The club have ended the season at the bottom of the West Lancashire League Premier Division and will take the drop into Division One, ending a stay in the Premier that began in the early 1990s.

"We are really disappointed," said Colin Whaley from the Eagley committee. "While other teams piled fixtures up and were in a position to bring in better players from other teams late in the season we got through our fixtures earlier and we didn't get enough points on the board.

"We just haven't been good enough though, that's the top and bottom of it, although we did win games against the top teams that we were not expected to win and dropped points in defeats to the teams around us at the bottom.

"It's disappointing but I would think the squad will stick together and with a few additions we will look to get back into the Premier next season."

Although Sunday did boast a number of attractions, the main feature was the run of nine derby matches, with teams from under-eights to the seniors in action, plus a dads' match.

Matthew Johnson of event sponsors Bolton Community Leisure said: "We are always looking for new ways to support and help sports activities in the local area, so when we had the chance to sponsor an event such as this we couldn’t be happier to participate in every way possible.

"We are pleased the event was so popular and had such a great turnout with so many juniors getting involved in sporting activities.

"We hope to have the opportunity of sponsoring the event next year and build on our relationships with the local sporting clubs."

The club's Colin Whaley added: "It is a shame we couldn't have made Sunday a day of celebration, but it was still a fantastic event. It was rammed thanks to good support from the local community."

While Eagley are set to lick their wounds over the summer, the three local teams who have competed in Division One this term all have reason to celebrate, as each has won either a league title, promotion or a trophy.

Tempest United are finishing on a high and have made the most of their games in hand to secure their passage to the top flight.

Tempest have overtaken Hawcoat Park to finish as runners-up and, barring a 13-goal defeat to Lytham in their final outing tonight, they will compete in the Premier Division next season.

Turton completed their fixtures at the weekend with a defeat at home to Poulton. Kingsley Williams' brace and one from Ali Dickson wasn't enough for the champions, as they shipped four to the Fylde side. Collecting one point from the final three fixtures should not bother Tigers' joint managers Neil Hart and Neil Johnson too much as the Division One title, and promotion to the top flight, were assured weeks ago.

Although Ladybridge won't be joining Turton and Tempest next term they did collect the Atherton Charity Cup and finished sixth in the table.

Division Two champions CMB are finishing the season strongly, with three wins out of three in May. They enjoyed a 4-1 victory over Swarthmoor Social on Saturday, with Paul Hallows (two), Matt Carr and Nathan Coyne scoring. CMB complete their successful campaign tonight at home to Leyland United.

Their Second Division rivals Bolton County also end the season with some silverware, as they won the Challenge Cup on Saturday, beating Millom in the final. Alex Todd scored the only goal of the final 10 minutes from time for County, who finished the league campaign in sixth place.

n In the Manchester League Division One Breightmet saw out the season with an emphatic 4-0 win against Hollinwood. That victory means Breightmet have taken seven points from their final three games and end the season in 10th place.
