QUEEN Anne continued their defence of the Open Cup with a convincing 3-0 victory over current league leaders Farnworth United.

In one of only two games played in the Bolton at Home Sunday League Queen Anne got the better of their closest rivals and last year’s runners-up to reach the semi-finals.

Midway through the first half Queen Anne, who are looking to reach their fifth consecutive cup final at the Macron Stadium, broke the deadlock when centre-forward Chris Donahue beat the goalkeeper in a one-on-one.

An excellent individual goal from Stuart Schofield made it 2-0 midway through the second half and, with five minutes remaining, Michael Rice killed off Farnworth with the third.

The only other game to beat the weather was the Division One Cup quarter-final tie between Newbury and Manny Road.

It was a classic in awful weather conditions, finishing 4-4 after extra-time with Newbury edging it 4-2 on penalties.

Newbury started the stronger and took the lead through Craig Sloane after five minutes.

Manny Road took their time settling into the game, and when they did they turned the game on its head with two goals in two minutes.

The first arrived on 30 minutes through Charley Helsby before Xavier Close put his side ahead with a powerful drive into the top corner.

Newbury rallied and levelled a minute before half time through Charlie Scholes.

Midway through the second half Manny Road played some neat football in Newbury’s penalty area and created an opening for Close to get his second.

Newbury manager Graham Sharples sent on his last available option, veteran forward Arron McCarthy, in a last throw of the dice and it paid off with five minutes left when he received the ball in the penalty area and smashed his shot home to send the game into extra time.

Close turned provider when he eased past a Newbury full-back and found Helsby who scored his second and Manny Road’s fourth.

But back came Newbury and in the last minute of the first period of extra time Sam Bradley hit a long ball from his own half for super sub McCarthy to slot past the keeper to set up the penalty shootout.
