CONTRACT rebel Dwayne Mattis will not be rushed out of Gigg Lane on the cheap, according to Shakers boss Chris Casper.

Although the 25-year-old midfielder has turned down a 12-month offer to stay at the club, Bury have still been able to brush off offers from Barnsley and MK Dons in the last 48 hours.

Barnsley's offer of £25,000 on Wednesday afternoon was doubled 24 hours later by the League Two Dons, who are also thought to have offered former Wigan Athletic defender Paul Mitchell in the bargain.

But neither deal suited the Shakers, and although Casper is all but resigned to losing his combative ball-winner for next season, he said the door would always be open for him to change his mind.

"I think we have to be realistic in that Dwayne can leave for nothing at the end of the season if he wants to," he said. "But at the same time it has got to be right for us, and we are not under pressure to sell anyone.

"With Dwayne, it's nothing personal against the club, he just feels it is the right time for him to move on. If that doesn't happen, then I'd love to keep him here.

"I think that in his position, he is one of the best players at this level, so it is no coincidence that he is getting a lot of attention."

Mattis' departure could also free up funds for Bury to snap up Hartlepool midfielder Stephen Turnbull, who was on loan at Gigg Lane earlier in the season.
