PREMIER League loan star John Welsh believes Bury are more than capable of winning their final two games of the season and securing promotion to League One.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who is on loan at Gigg Lane from Hull City, has been impressed with the quality of Alan Knill’s men during his short spell at the club.

Bury have taken 11 points from the five games since Welsh joined, and the former Liverpool ace says he has seen enough in that time to suggest he is at a club on the way up.

“The team here is good enough to win promotion,” said Welsh, who has won eight England under-21 caps.

“It’s a good standard here, we have got some really good footballers – people like Stephen Dawson and Brian Barry-Murphy amongst others.

“I think the group has everything to make a good team. There are scorers, tacklers, passers and I think it’s a good blend of characters in the dressing room.

“I have no doubt that’s the reason we are in the position we are in the league.”

Tomorrow’s trip to Gillingham represents a tough test for Bury, with the Priestfield outfit still harbouring hopes of snatching the third and final automatic promotion spot themselves.

Any slip-ups could consign Bury to the lottery of the play-offs, but Welsh claims victory is well within the team’s grasp.

“We have got the players to go there and win,” he said. “If we give everything we have got, we will get the three points.

“However, we do know that it’s going to be a tough game and it will take a big effort to win. But they are all tough games at this stage of the season.

“There are two games left and we are in a great position – the lads are relishing it.

“We need results to go our way as well, but you always need a bit of luck in football.

“We are just focusing on winning our final two games, hoping other teams drop points and then we can go up automatically.”

Stephen Dawson returns from suspension tomorrow to give manager Knill virtually a full strength squad to choose from.

The team will travel down today and Knill has called in a favour from his former Bury team-mate Phil Parkinson for his side to train at Charlton Athletic en route.
