KASPER Schmeichel hopes to have the same impact on Bury's fortunes as the last time he came to the club.

The rock-bottom Shakers entertain Grimsby Town tomorrow having failed to pick up a single point in their four games this season.

A shock Carling Cup victory over Sunderland buoyed confidence around the club, and the arrival of Schmeichel 24 hours later has got Gigg Lane regulars believing they can pull themselves clear of trouble soon.

The 19-year-old shot-stopper spent three months on loan at the club towards the end of last season, proving a hit with fans as the club successfully fought against relegation.

During a 15-game spell, Schmeichel conceded only 13 goals, and he admitted the relationships he forged with the Shakers supporters helped convince him to return to the town.

"I have had a few offers from other places but the right move didn't come up. When something concrete came up here I grabbed it right away," he said.

"I could have gone somewhere else and maybe not performed to my best because I didn't know the place.

"I have always liked Bury's stadium. The whole place has got character, the fans are great, I love it here."

Schmeichel was pushed on to the periphery at the City of Manchester Stadium after the club signed Sweden international Andreas Isaksson.

His only rival at Gigg Lane for a first team place will be current number one Alan Fettis, and manager Casper said the competition will bring the best out of both players.

"I think it is a good time for Kasper to come and join us," he said.

"He will add strength to the squad, which I think we need.

"We will bring him in first and then see where we go. It's competition for places and an excellent addition to the squad."

The Shakers will run the rule over Matt Tipton and Marc Pugh's fitness for the Grimsby game, but skipper Dave Challinor and winger Marc Goodfellow are doubtful.

Centre half John Fitzgerald will miss the game after picking up a red card in the 2-0 victory over Sunderland, leaving the door open for Andy Parrish.
