BOLTON Mets prop up North West Men's League Division Four after a third defeat in the opening three games of the season.

A heavy 64-4 setback at Manchester Rangers left the Avenue Street men the only team in the division still without a point.

Despite the scoreline, they put in an improved performance at the Belle Vue Sports Village.

After conceding two tries and a conversion a spectacular try by Gareth Shaw gave the visitors hope.

He intercepted a wayward pass from the opposition before a 50-metre sprint to cross after 12 minutes with Mark Dorning adding the extras to make the score 10-6.

Three more tries before the half-time whistle gave the Rangers a 20-point lead to kill the game off before scoring six tries in a one-way second half.

Mets' man of the match was Jonathon Besford with runner-ups captain Ste Hickey and Dorning.

Chairman Stuart Cooke said: “I really think that a few minor tweaks could lead to some major changes.

“It was good to see Gareth get his first try for the club and Jonathon pick up the man-of-the-match award in only his second game. |Hopefully the first win isn't a million miles away."

In the same division, Westhoughton Lions beat Culcheth Eagles 38-32 at home and Little Hulton Reds went down 32-14 at Rochdale Cobras.
