IT is one of the plus points of working regular night shifts that I have managed to continue to score for Golborne first team over the last 25 seasons.

About four years ago, I was asked if I would like to do the odd game for the Wigan district set up – which at the time I had very little knowledge about.

It is always enjoyable going to visit new grounds in different leagues, as happened last week on a visit to Greenfield, which is a lovely place and setting.

I now attend about 10-15 games across the three age groups and was fortunate enough to see both the under-11s and u15s win both their district finals in the same season – a rare occurrence at this level.

The u15s were defeated in their final at Leigh last year.

While at Greenfield, it struck me not only how many people were out watching but the commitment of everyone involved.

From the clubs making grounds and facilities available, to parents and organisers – many of whom I'm sure have to juggle work and other considerations.

From the Wigan perspective, Peter Sixsmith, Peter Houghton and Nigel Geary put so much time into making sure everything runs smoothly and that reflects in the success in recent times.

There is no lack of ability, either, and, of course, these are the players who will shape the future of the game in the years ahead.

Talking to one of the parents, with Lancashire trials, playing at weekend and football his son could be playing five or six times a week.

I'm sure he's not the only one who runs the risk of burn out – certainly not at that age.

If you get the opportunity go out and watch these games as you should be pleasantly surprised.
