BOLTON Metro Swim Squad brought home 13 medals from the final weekend of action at the ASA North West Region Summer Championships.

Those medals – six gold, four silver and three bronze – were shared between just four swimmers – Gabriel Glynn, Isaac Bernard, Jake Reynolds and Jack Morris.

The combined efforts of Gabriel, Isaac, Jake and Jack put Bolton eighth of 37 clubs in the medal table for swimmers aged 14 and under.

Head coach Mike Robinson said: "These exceptional results are the culmination of months of demanding training.

"For a club of our size to come eighth in this category shows we are punching well above our weight."

Bolton Metro Swim Squad enjoyed decent successes in the older age groups, who swam earlier in the month, but it seems the high-performance team saved their best until last as they competed against some of the top city clubs from across the region at the Manchester Aquatics Centre in the 11-12, 13 and 14-year age categories.

Gabriel and Isaac produced the best set of results in the 13-year age group. Gabriel won four golds in the 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m and 100m freestyle, as well as two bronze in the 100m butterfly and 200m individual medley.

Isaac won two gold and one bronze, blitzing the fields in the 50m and 100m breaststroke, winning his two finals by more than two seconds, and taking third place in the 200m breaststroke.

Jake won three silvers in the 11-12s breaststroke, beaten in the 50m, 100m and 200m finals by the same swimmer, Jack Smith, of Carlisle Aquatics. He was pipped by less than three tenths of a second in the 50m final and while Jake was beaten by wider margins in the 100m and 200m finals, the young swimmer showed his potential with some sterling performances.

Jack completed the medal haul with silver in the 14s 200m individual medley, and also finished just outside the podium places in a handful of finals.

Junior coach Laurence Mills added: "This is a small squad, yet we have out-performed many much bigger teams.

"It goes to show our friendly, but rigorous approach really does get the very best out of our young swimmers.

"These children make great friends here – but they work hard and produce fantastic results too."

Gabriel and Isaac will now compete at either the national or British championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield later this year after clocking the best times in their events in the region.

They will be joined by Canon Slade pupil Charlotte Hulme, of Tottington, who won the 14s 50m breaststroke title at the regional championships.

The City of Manchester Swim Team member competed in nine events and made six finals.

She will swim in four events at the English National Championships, taking on the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke as well as the 100m butterfly.

It has not yet been confirmed exactly how many BMSS swimmers will compete at the English or British Championships, but after sending 33 swimmers in total to the regionals and reaching 37 finals across all age groups, it is clear the small club is certainly pulling above its weight.

BMSS is one of the few high-performance clubs in the country that relies on funding from parents to keep it going.
