HORWICH St Mary’s Victoria joint manager Danny Holmes hopes his team will put cup disappointment behind them when they host neighbours Old Boltonians on Saturday.

Horwich put in what Holmes described as a very disappointing performance at Roach Dynamoes on Saturday to exit the Lancashire FA Amateur Cup at the first hurdle with a 3-2 defeat.

Going behind on 15 minutes after failing to deal with a set-piece, Holmes’s side were back on level terms on the stroke of half time through Tim Raines.

They then edged ahead after the interval through Benson Johnson but were pegged back on the hour mark when another set-piece delivery caused problems in their box.

And a mistake on the right five minutes later led to a third for Roach.

Ten minutes from time, Jonny Shacklady could have forced a penalty shoot-out but fired his shot straight at the Roach keeper.

Holmes said: “It was a very disappointing result and performance.

“There were no complaints with the result – hands down the best team won on the day and Roach deserved to go through.

“They were up for it and very direct and we just could not get our game going.

“We rotated the team a bit but still should have done better – we just did not deal with their set-pieces all game.”

Focus for Holmes now switches to Saturday and the visit of Old Bolts who currently sit fourth, two places behind Horwich St Mary’s.

And after just one defeat in the Lancashire Amateur League Premier Division to date. Holmes wants a response from his team.

“It is a big game for both sides,” Holmes added.

“Hopefully we will react well after the weekend and return to the form that has seen us start the campaign well.”

Old Bolts boss Steve Eccleshare is also expecting a tight affair but takes his team in after progression in the cup – albeit without kicking a ball.

Their opponents Collegiate Old Boys from Liverpool did not turn up so Bolts were handed a home walkover.

Eccleshare said: “Obviously we are happy to go through but frustrated because we had warmed up, the referee was there and then we got the call to say they couldn’t field a team. We would rather have had a game ahead of Saturday.”

Blackrod Town also progressed after an 11-0 home victory against AFC Colne while Bolton Wyresdale also had a home walkover against Baxters.
