A CLOSE and competitive match saw Markland Hill C edge out Westhoughton C 10-8 in the Bolton Badminton League's B Section this week.
Playing first couple for hosts Markland Hill – who sit third – Kath Spillane and Ian Waters claimed both opening games 21-17, 21-14 against Kelly Anderson and John Cole.
Cecilia Rodger and Kieran Waters, Markland Hill’s second couple, then won both their games 21-13, 21-15 against Lynda Redford and Shaun Chadwick,
When the third couples met they shared their games, Markland Hill’s Alana McClarence and Alan Edgeley taking the first 21-16 and fifth-placed Westhoughton’s Abbie Edwards and Adam Carney reciprocated by taking the second 21-16.
The following four games of mixed went in Markland Hill’s favour.
When the first couples met, Spillane and Ian Waters won 21-16, 21-18 against Redford and Chadwick.
Two nail-biting games followed when the second couples met, Markland Hill’s Rodger and Kieran Waters managing to hold on to claim both 22-20, 25-23 against Anderson and Cole.
Going into the level doubles Markland Hill were in a position to secure a win, but Westhoughton’s Edwards and Redford had other ideas when they claimed the first pair of ladies’ games 21-19, 21-12 against McClarence and Spillane.
The win was clinched when the first pair of men’s games took place, Edgeley and Ian Waters claiming the first 21-18 before Westhoughton’s Carney and Chadwick clinched the second 21-12.
Although the match resulted in victory for Markland Hill, a determined Westhoughton team proved they are a determined outfit that wants to win as many games as possible.
Edwards and Anderson claimed the second pair of ladies’ games when they beat McClarence and Rodger 21-17, 21-13 and Carney and Cole claimed both the final men’s games 21-0, 21-0.
