LOSTOCK AC's Matt Withers completed the 36 miles of the Guernsey Ultra marathon in 8hrs 27mins to finish 41st overall. Starting and finishing at the Liberation Monument in St Peter's Port, the route is an undulating, multi-terrain course that circumvents the island with 1000m of ascent.

Conditions on the day were hot and sunny with a deceptive sea breeze that left Withers and all the other runners with sunburn.

Struggling with injury at the midpoint of the race, Withers needed to draw on all his resilience to complete a race that would have challenged the most experienced of runners, let alone one that has only been running seriously for 18 months.

At the opposite end of the UK, Albert Sunter and Tony Marlow headed to the Isle of Jura for the fell race of the same name, which takes place over the iconic 'Paps of Jura'.

Marlow finished the 16-mile, 7,000-feet course in 5:22:00 with Sunter coming in two minutes later.

Lostock AC sent a team of 11 runners to the first Harrock Hill midweek fell race on May 24.

Rob Sharkey was the first Lostocker home in 40:23 and was 26th overall.

Lostock results: Rob Sharkey 40:23, Mark Shuttleworth 43:38, Chris Taylor 46:14, Mark Checkley 47:50, Jordan Sunter 49:15, Michelle Sunter 45:57, Ian Johnson 50:46, Claire Shewbridge 52:51, Rob Garstang 55:40, Vikki Goodyear 58:17, David Wilcock 58:17.

Closer to home, Niall Owens turned in a blistering performance at the Hesketh Memorial Duathlon to finish third in a time of 1:18:08.

Equally strong performances came from James Jackson who ran a 1:31:05 (19th overall) and Jack Bibby, who finished 34th in 1:36:20.

Jonathan Cosgrove also continued his strong start to the triathlon season, finishing 31st overall and 10th in his age group at the Rossendale Triathlon.
