BURNDEN’S Mark Swannell led home a huge turnout of 51 members at the tough Henderson’s End fell race in Rivington.

The race involves 1,250 feet of ascent, which includes visits to the Pike, Two Lads and the television mast at Winter Hill before returning back on the same route to Rivington Barn.

Swannell finished 10th overall and third M40 in 57mins 58secs. He was one of four members in the first 25 finishers. Rob Short was 14th in 59:22, George Butler 22nd in 1:03:31, Marcus Taylor 24th in 1:03:41 and Marcus Chester 25th in 1:03:48.

Paula Pilling was the first female member to finish and was third F35 in 1:08:50.

Two members claimed age-group wins. Kirsty White was first F45 in 1:09:43 and Anne Ferguson first F55 in 1:11:25.

The F45 category was dominated by Burnden with the club taking the top five places. Isaline Pollitt was second in 1:11:42, followed by third-placed Shirley Staveley (1:14:13), Lyndsay Darbyshire in fourth (1:14:53) and Lucille Corrigan fifth (1:19:13).

The club took the first three places in the F55 category with Lesley Fisher’s 1:11:27 and Jane Forrest’s 1:18:04 adding to Ferguson’s success. Philip Glassbrook was second M70 in 1:31:49.

Jackie Oakes took part in the National Trust’s Grasmere Gallop and completed the demanding and scenic 17k course in 1:49:29.

The latest instalment of the Lakeland Trail Series, taking place in Coniston, saw Ed Ashton finish 13th overall and second V50 in the hilly marathon with a time of 3:44:23, while Fiona Ashton tackled the half marathon and came home in 2:33:07.

Mel Walker finished second V70 at the Morecambe Super Bowl 10K with a time of 48:38.

Johnny McGowan chose the Burnley 10K for his first crack at the distance and completed the event in 1:22:58, crossing the line with Sarah Woodiwiss (1:22:57) and his mum Gillian (1:22:59).

Joanne Darby was the first member to finish the race, posting a time of 58:16, with Debra Hennessey just a few seconds behind in 58:33.

Matt Barker tackled the middle distance at the Chester Deva Triathlon as his Ironman training was cranked up.

The gruelling extended event involves a 1,900m swim in the River Dee, an 87km bike ride and a half marathon to finish.

Barker completed the swim in 47:04, the bike section in 3:02:04 and the run in 2:05:20 for a total of 6:03:48.

Nick and Tim Taylor headed to the Blenheim Palace Triathlon and returned with two fine performances under their belts.

Nick posted a total time of 1:26:16, finishing a highly impressive 519th out of nearly 5,000 competitors. He completed the 750m swim in 13:13, the 20km bike ride in 40:16 and the 5.4km run in 24:59.

Tim did the swim in 17:50, the bike ride in 43:48 and the run in 29:22 for a total time of 1:38:44.
