BOLTON Metro Swimming Squad continued to re-write the record books at the recent ASA North West Regional Summer Championships, winning more medals than they had ever done before.

The elite-performance squad, made up of around 75 of the best young swimmers from the town's various different clubs, outshone much bigger rivals to claim seven gold, 14 silver and nine bronze medals.

It followed a similar achievement at the Lancashire ASA County Championships at the start of the year, when BMSS swimmers smashed the club's previous record medal haul at that event.

Head coach Mike Robinson was understandably proud of the progress his young swimmers are making.

He said: “Bolton Metro Swim Squad is a small and friendly squad, but our results show we are a force to be reckoned with.

"We are sending more swimmers than ever before to the national championships and our younger swimmers are developing to become the stars of the future.

"We are proud of all our swimmers, who train so hard to reach this level."

The squad were sixth in the medal tables at the summer championships – held at Manchester Aquatic Centre over a series of weekends in May and June – despite being much smaller than other competing teams.

Jake Reynolds was Metro's most successful swimmer, claiming three gold, three silver and three bronze medals in a range of events.

Anna Doughty won one gold medal, three silver, and one bronze.

As a whole, the squad achieved more final places than ever before, with Bolton swimmers competing in finals in 59 separate events.

Seven members of the squad also achieved national qualifying times.

Doughty, Reynolds, James Morrison, Gabriel Glynn, Isaac Brennand, Georgia Ashton and Luke Batty will all compete at the 2017 ASA National Summer Meet from August 2-6.

BMSS is continuing to look for sponsorship to help support their young swimmers and reduce the financial burden on their parents.
