HORWICH's Jubilee road race series had its third leg of four organised by the Harriers but dominated on this occasion by Blackburn Harriers, with Ben Fish putting on a great display of road running from the front to win by more than two-and-a-half minutes from his club colleague Christopher Davies.

After the first lap it was a Blackburn one-two-three but Bolton’s John Knowles ran a strong second lap to take third place at the finish. Horwich’s Lindsey Brindle won the first female prize.

In the junior street race there was a big field in race one for under-11s with Ethan Isaacs striding out for a clear win ahead of Ethan Davies (Leigh) and Blythe Cordwell (Chorley).

Blythe was first female, followed in fourth place by Harrier Harrison Stokes in fine form as the first under-nine home. Emma Bradley was Horwich’s first girl home in this race in sixth place, while Oliver Gibson and Joshua Houghton also ran well for top-10 places for the Harriers.

In race two for u15s, it was a one-two-three for the Harriers where county athletes Lewis Wilkes and Robert Seddon were split by u13 Matthew Flatters. First female in this race was Blackburn’s Amy-Nicola Davies. Only seven seconds behind was Horwich’s Isabella Merritt, taking the F13 category in a close-run race with Grace Tobin of Southport Waterloo.

Otherwise, it has been a relatively quiet week for the Harriers, especially on the fells, but the mid-season opportunity for recovery will be good preparation, not least for Simon Pymm who, after the Kentmere Horseshoe race last week, is now placed second in the 2017 Lakes Grand Prix – only 24 points behind Joshua Jardine of Helm Hill and with everything to play for with only two races left.

Those are the stamina-testing Three Shires in September and the tough Langdale Horseshoe in October.

Horwich’s David Milliken is in 10th place overall and first in the M40 and M50 categories.

Also taking the opportunity for a bit of cross training and recovery were several members of the Horwich runners group who dusted down their bikes and headed off for a trip to Lytham.

In parkrun, there were three first places for Horwich – Lukas Siska (at Bolton), Richard Howarth (at Cuerden Valley) and Nick Leigh (at Haigh Woodland).

Leigh achieved an age grading of more than 81 per cent, maintaining his fine parkrun record of consistently fast results over several years.

In the Stockport Quadrathlon, Aidan McKenna was Horwich’s sole representative and in two of the four events – long jump and 600m – he achieved new personal bests.
