JOHN McGinlay will be the guest of honour at a family fun day on Sunday when Breightmet Wanderers will official name their new home.

The club has raised more than £10,000 to refurbish an overgrown field off Newby Road after agreeing a 25-year lease for the former Bolton Council pitch.

They have had help from local firms J Dickinson Skips and All Seasons Landscapers, who have done much of the preparatory work, while Persimmon Homes have donated a cabin to allow them to store equipment securely on site.

But much of the graft has been done by members, who have helped to dig up, reseed and relay the pitch.

The final cut was done last weekend and the playing area will be marked out in time for the new season, which kicks off on September 9.

"After years of dreaming and plenty of hard work, we are now extremely proud to have somewhere to call our own – and we would love as many people as possible from the local community to be there to celebrate with us," said club treasurer Andrew Fearnley ahead of the fun day, which will take place from noon to 3pm.

"The official name of the new pitch is being kept under wraps as a surprise, but it will honour those who have done most to help the club reach this point.

"As well as the naming ceremony, we will have lots of fun activities on the day, including Quickfeet and penalty competitions and a keepy-up contest, as well as a barbecue, raffle and music."

Breightmet Wanderers have 11 teams and 180 players, from under-5s up to u18s, playing in the Bolton, Bury and District Football League.

They were set up in 2009 and will continue to play at their original home, on the all-weather surface at St Catherine's Academy, as well as on the new pitch.
