WESTHOUGHTON C narrowly got the better of bottom club Deane B with a 10-8 victory in Section B.

A close-fought match remained in the balance until the final encounter of the night when the fourth-placed side's pair of Adam Carney and Shaun Chadwick held their nerve to take both games.

Mandy Gow and Chadwick put visitors Westhoughton in the driving seat when they claimed the opening games 21-11, 21-16 against Samantha Robertson and Umer Azeem.

Deane’s second pair of Patricia Beck and Rob Brocklehurst reciprocated by taking the next two 21-15, 21-16 against Jackie Roberts and Sam Duda.

The third couples shared their games with Westhoughton's Lauren Muddiman and Carney winning the first 21-15 and Bharti Budhia and Pravin Pindolia taking the second 22-20.

In the first couples’ clash, Westhoughton’s Roberts and Duda won comfortably 21-10, 21-11 against Robertson and Azeem.

The match swung in Deane’s favour when the second couples met, Beck and Brocklehurst claiming both games with a nail-biting 24-22 and a more comfortable 21-14 against Gow and Chadwick.

Going into the level doubles the match was 5-5 and all to play for.

Deane’s Budhia and Robertson edged their team ahead, winning the first pair of ladies’ games 21-15, 21-14 against Muddiman and Roberts.

Westhoughton hit back to level the match score again when Carney and Duda claimed both first men’s games 21-14, 21-14 against Pindolia and Azeem.

There was still no separating the sides in the penultimate match-up of the night when the second pair of ladies’ games was shared – Westhoughton’s Muddiman and Gow winning the first 21-18 and Budhia and Beck taking the second 21-17.

Going into the final men’s games the score was 8-8 and it was down to who would hold their nerve.

The determined Westhoughton pair of Carney and Chadwick proved the men for the moment as they saw off Pindolia and Brocklehurst 21-16, 21-17 to seal the victory for their team.
