WRESTLER Charlie Bowling has brushed up on the words to Jerusalem, in the hope of singing the Team England anthem from the top step of the podium at the Commonwealth Games.

Boltonian Bowling competes in the 65kg weight division and is part of a trio of 21-year-old freestyle wrestlers from the town who are targeting medals on the Gold Coast.

George Ramm from Harwood and Georgina Nelthorpe, who lives in Burnley and is a member of the same Sharples Wrestling Club as the other two, are also confident or putting in strong performances.

Bowling, from Westhoughton, said: “I don’t think words can describe how happy I’d feel to be standing with the gold medal and singing the words to Jerusalem – I’ve been learning at home.

“A lot of people know about the history of wrestling in the town, so people are excited back home.

“I’ve had some good support coming into it, so hopefully I can bring back a medal and inspire the next generation of wrestlers.”

With the wrestling events coming towards the end of the Commonwealth Games schedule, Team England’s squad are still in the throes of intense training.

Ramm, competing in the 57kg division, said: “We’ve got quite a few hard more days to go.

“You can’t come off the gas too early, you can’t keep the gas going too late, so you’ve got to find the happy medium to come off so you can peak at the right time, but we’ll get it right.”

Like Bowling, Ramm spoke of the legacy the Games can have on English wrestling, hoping that success on the Gold Coast can shine a light on a little-publicised sport.

He said: “The aim is to make wrestling as popular as other sports, so the more people get involved then we can produce more quality coming out of England.

“I think this is the best style of wrestling to watch – it’s fast, it’s aggressive and you’ve got to be flexible.”
