WANDERERS have terminated the contract of defender Alex Finney – just three days after he appeared for the club against Blackpool in the EFL Cup.

The former Leyton Orient centre-half has been on the fringes of the first team squad for the last 12 months and appeared frequently under Phil Parkinson over the summer.

His start in the 4-2 defeat at Bloomfield Road was only his third for the Whites and his first since April but the decision is said to have been made to accommodate new signing Andrew Taylor.

Wanderers are under an embargo which limits the number of first team players they can have in their squad, with each incoming deal needing scrutiny from the Football League.

In order to get Taylor registered with the league for tomorrow's game against AFC Wimbledon, the agreement with Finney to cancel his contract was brought forward.

Parkinson told The Bolton News: "It was nothing to do with how the game went on Tuesday at all, it was just because we are limited to numbers with the embargo, we have got to make room to bring players in as we go along in this window.

"I didn't see Alex figuring as much as he would have liked this season.

"He had the option to go on loan to a Conference club but he wanted to sign for a league club.

"Now we have given him time between today and the end of the window. If he doesn't find a club he will still be a free agent.

"Both parties are happy with the decision."
