GEORGE Oghani had been on the dole before John McGovern brought him to Burnden Park in October 1983.

After an unsuccessful spell at Bury, the striker had been playing non-league with Hyde when Wanderers took a gamble, which eventually cost the princely figure of £5,000.

Oghani had to wait for a regular opportunity – but started the 1984/85 season as first-choice striker with Tony Caldwell and grabbed his first goal in an incredible 4-4 League Cup draw against Oldham Athletic.

He scored twice as the Latics overturned a 2-1 deficit from the first leg to force the game into extra time.

Oldham old boy Graham Bell also got on the scoresheet but Jeff Chandler proved the Whites’ match-winner, booking a meeting with Shrewsbury Town in the next round.

Oghani scored 21 times that season in a lethal partnership with Caldwell yielding 38 goals.

Ian Greaves’s arrival as manager at Burnden in 1974 brought the best out of Hugh Curran, seen scoring the equalising goal against Oldham.

Jimmy Armfield had forked out £40,000 for the former Wolves and Scotland striker but he had not found the back of the net before Greaves replaced the Leeds-bound boss. A run of six goals in six games ended with a header against Oldham, and Curran ended the campaign as Wanderers’ top scorer on 11.

The last competitive match between the two sides was in 2005 when Ricardo Vaz Te scored his first-ever goal for the club to settle an FA Cup fourth round tie at Boundary Park.

Oldham had beaten Manchester City in the previous round but despite a tricky playing surface, Sam Allardyce’s side held firm. The only downside of the day was the sight of Nicky Hunt leaving the field on a stretcher after a poor challenge from Lee Croft.
