WANDERERS have yet to fully commit to extending the loan of Sammy Ameobi or James Henry into the New Year, The Bolton News understands.

Both players see their current deal expire after Monday’s game against Coventry City, after which they are due to return to Newcastle United and Wolves, respectively.

Phil Parkinson has indicated that he would like to keep them until the end of the season and both parent clubs are known to be open to the possibility.

But Wanderers are reluctant to press the button on the deal until after the Coventry game to ensure neither player picks up an injury over the course of the next two games.

Parkinson’s side face League One leaders Scunthorpe United this afternoon, with Ameobi very likely to start on the right side of attack.

The manager has left negotiations to chairman Ken Anderson and his son Lee but confirmed yesterday: “Talks are ongoing.”

Ameobi has been a big hit at the Macron, making 22 appearances and scoring four goals since joining the club on deadline day.

Henry has made 10 of his 19 appearances from the bench after struggling to get in front of Ameobi and Zach Clough in Parkinson’s pecking order but his pedigree of success in League One could be vital in the latter months of the campaign.

Anderson stated earlier in the month that Wanderers are unlikely to make signings when the transfer window reopens but Parkinson and his chief scout Tim Breacker plan to remain vigilant.

The chairman has stated in public that only the most outlandish bids for young talents Josh Vela and Zach Clough would be entertained.

But with the transfer embargo still in place, it will almost certainly be a case of ‘one in, one out’ unless special dispensation is sought from the Football League.

“January is a long month and you never know what might happen,” Parkinson said. “We’re working hard to be prepared for any eventuality and if we do get into a position where we can sign a player we want, then I’d like to think we’ve done the groundwork to move quickly on him.”
