WILL Buckley wants to rebuild his reputation at Wanderers as one of the Championship’s top wingers.

After a £2.5million Premier League dream move to Sunderland went sour, a stream of disappointing loan moves has left the 27-year-old’s career at somewhat of a standstill.

Spells at Birmingham City, Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday came to nothing as he sought a move away from the Stadium of Light.

But Buckley believes he has now found the ideal club to recapture the form he once showed at this level at Brighton – and has vowed to help establish Phil Parkinson’s promoted side back in the second tier this season.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Buckley feels the chance of a fresh start back in his native North West could be just what he needs.

“I don’t think I’ve been at my best for a while now, and that’s what I want to be for Bolton,” he said. “The loan moves I made didn’t work out, I can’t really hide away from that.

“Last season I went to Sheffield Wednesday, got a few injuries and just couldn’t get into a really good team. It was frustrating because I felt like I could have contributed more. It was difficult. I still believe in my ability – especially in the Championship – and I need to get myself back on track this season.”

Buckley has played 160 games in the Championship, primarily for Watford and Brighton, and has scored 25 goals.

And it was at Albion he developed a knack for coming back to haunt Bolton, a club who had passed on him as a 15-year-old on trial.

“I have always enjoyed playing at Bolton – whether it was the Reebok or the Macron,” he laughed. “But now it’s my own club and my own ground, I might enjoy scoring there even more.

“I have played a lot of football in this division, some of the other lads might not, I don’t know. But it’s my job to help anyone along that I can.

“I spoke quite a bit to the manager earlier in the summer and one of the big things for me was that he really seemed to want me here. After what has happened, I needed it.

“We have spoken about the way he wants to play, what he wants to do here and I’m really looking forward to getting going. This feels like the right club for me.”
