WANDERERS’ Under-23s are champions of the Professional Development League North after their Sheffield Wednesday counterparts lost 2-1 at home to Burnley.

The Whites youngsters topped the table but had to endure a wait to see if Wednesday could capitalise on their game in hand.

And today’s home loss for the Owls means David Lee’s team finish at the summit and go into Tuesday’s play-off against South champions Charlton at the Macron (kick off 7pm) on a high.

“It’s been a great achievement by the lads,” said White Hot legend Lee. “It’s been an immense effort by them, they’ve done really well all season and now it’s time to see if they can do it under pressure.

“They’ve got to try to achieve something more and it should be a great occasion.”

But there were contrasting fortunes for Nicky Spooner’s u18s who lost their U18 Professional Development League play-off 3-1 at Crystal Palace this afternoon.

After a season spent mostly at the top of the table, last weekend’s final-day 1-0 defeat at home to Leeds saw Spooner’s side slip to second and a play-off against the Eagles.

And although they cancelled out Palace’s opener, two goals in the final six minutes wrapped it up for the hosts.
