PLAYER RATINGS: Sheffield Wednesday 1 Bolton Wanderers 3

The Bolton News: Star man Matt Mills Star man Matt Mills

WANDERERS (4-2-3-1)

ADAM BOGDAN...7 The Hungarian’s save just before the break came at a time when a second goal for the Owls would have been crucial.

OSCAR THRELKELD...7 Grew into the game, put his tackles in, and matched two decent wingers in Helan and Antonio stride for stride.

MATT MILLS...9 Hard to fault anything he did. His reading of the game was outstanding, his passing reliable.

DAVID WHEATER...8 His partnership with Mills is very encouraging for the future. Looking fit, strong and in the form of his Bolton career.

TIM REAM...7 A couple of early jitters but if the US World Cup scouts were watching – he’s on the plane ahead of Onyewu for sure.

JAY SPEARING...8 Buzzed around midfield, took the ball in the right areas and didn’t waste it. Leading by example in Freedman’s system.

LIAM TROTTER...8 The midfielder has improved consistently in recent weeks and that goal should do wonders for his confidence levels.

CHUNG-YONG LEE...7 Excellent in the first half but looked to slow down towards the end. Used the ball intelligently around the box.

NEIL DANNS...7 Never stopped working but should have had more than one goal to show for his considerable efforts.

ROB HALL...7 It didn’t all come off for the youngster but he continued to take responsibility for the ball and run at the Owls.

JERMAINE BECKFORD...7 Wednesday were frightened of his pace, and it seems the linesman couldn’t keep track of him either.

Subs: Jutkiewicz 73 (for Hall) 6 – Fans called for Freedman to sign him up.

Kellett 79 (for Beckford) 7 – Made a real impact, could have created a couple.

Youngs 84 (for Chung-Yong) – Only saw a few touches of the ball.

Not used: Lonergan, Knight, Robinson, Iliev.

STAR MAN – Matt Mills Just didn’t put a foot wrong in the back four, dominating the Owls’ 6ft 6ins front man Nuhui. On top of that, his passing from the back was exemplary. Mills is finishing the season in top form.

Quick on the whistle and with the cards at times. Wednesday’s fans may not have given a glowing recommendation, either.

Goals: Wednesday – Mattock 38 Wanderers – Danns 8, Chung-Yong 19, Trotter 29

Entertainment – 7/10 The second half slowed down but this was no end-of-season snooze-fest. There could have been a landslide of goals in the first half but there was still plenty to admire later on, especially when Kellett came on.

Atmosphere – 7/10 Packed with 23,000-plus fans, Hillsborough was in good voice. Wanderers’ travelling contingent was treated to some special football to keep them on top note.

Match point – Adam Bogdan made a crucial save from Lavery right on the stroke of half time, just as Wednesday looked like sneaking back into the game.

Magic moment – “He’s one of us,” chanted the Wanderers fans when Andy Kellett came on in the second half. Between him, Tom Youngs and Oscar Threlkeld, there was definitely plenty of local pride on show.
