THIS weekend’s cup opponents Crystal Palace will be aiming to secure only their second victory over Wanderers since 1983 when they arrived at the Macron.

There have been some titanic clashes between the two sides, none more so than in 1998 as Colin Todd’s team was battling to escape the bottom three in the Premier League.

Nathan Blake, Mark Fish, Alan Thompson, Dean Holdsworth and Jimmy Phillips scored in a 5-2 thriller. The Eagles, already relegated and under the stewardship of Terry Venables, replied through Dean Gordon and Marcus Bent but had Valerin Ismael sent off for a second bookable offence with eight minutes remaining.

Back in the 1993/94 season, Crystal Palace were romping to promotion from the First Division but didn’t get much change out of Bruce Rioch’s Super Whites.

Gareth Southgate cancelled out Owen Coyle’s goal at Selhurst Park – but John McGinlay netted the winner at Burnden to inflict a rare defeat on Alan Smith’s team.

Several years later, the Palace fans were calling for Smith’s head in his second spell as manager as Wanderers improved their own promotion chances in the First Division under Sam Allardyce.

Nicky Summerbee and Ian Marshall scored the goals and future Bolton boss Dougie Freedman hit the bar for the Eagles in a tense tie, which ended with the home fans demanding the return of Steve Coppell.

Back in 1973, Jimmy Armfield’s newly-promoted team earned a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Burnden to keep up their unbeaten start to the campaign.

Stuart Lee grabbed his first goal of the season before John Byrom took his tally to four goals in three games in front of just over 18,000 supporters.

The most recent game between the two sides saw Freedman go back to Palace as manager of Wanderers and slug out a 0-0 draw in January 2013.
