DOUGIE Freedman reckons he is getting a “clearer picture” of what he must do to transform Wanderers into promotion candidates.

All signs point to a busy week for the new boss, who is scouring for one more loan signing to add to his squad before tomorrow evening’s deadline.

Following the arrival of Jacob Butterfield from Norwich City a fortnight ago, the Scot looks set to bolster his midfield once again before this weekend’s trip to Brighton.

Freedman also gave Marcos Alonso, Benik Afobe, Marvin Sordell, Joe Riley and Tim Ream a runout for the development squad against Blackburn Rovers on Monday night, meaning he has now seen the vast majority of his squad in competitive action.

And though a thorough clearout is expected in January, the manager now has a good idea what positions he now needs to strengthen if he is to close the gap on the leading pack in the Championship.

“Options are fine but the ones you'd like to call upon are the ones to win you games,” he said.

“It's no use having 40 players and 35 are no good. But is it a squad in depth I need now or more quality?

“I'm getting a clearer picture now. More during the week than during games but I am getting a better idea now who wants to go forward with their career.”

Freedman remains unbeaten in the four games since taking over the reins but may need to coax a better performance out of his side if they are to stay that way over two potentially tricky away ties on the horizon.

A first-ever trip to the Amex Stadium on Saturday will be followed four days later by a Lancashire derby under the lights of Ewood Park.

But Freedman remains undaunted by the prospect, and is confident he can return home with points from both trips.

“Every game is difficult but I never look at it that way,” he said.

“Everyone has different ways of looking at life. Some people are worried about getting married and others are happy.

“I'm personally looking forward to the game against Brighton.

“I think we have got to stick together and the results will turn round.”
