Austin gameplan caught on camera

WANDERERS’ back four might be sick of the sight of Charlie Austin, even before attempting to tackle him on the pitch tomorrow.

Dougie Freedman has ensured his players know everything they can about the Burnley hitman, who landed the knock-out blow at Turf Moor earlier this season in a 2-0 win.

Austin has 24 goals to his name in all competitions but, claims the Wanderers boss, does have a chink in his armour.

“I have watched Charlie a lot in the lower leagues and it’s quite obvious he’s a goalscorer,” Freedman said.

“His all-round play has got better too.

“But we have done videos upon videos on him. We know, and the players have seen in the sessions, his movements and where he has scored goals from.

“If you do study him, every week he does score the same type of goal.

“If we understand where that is, we can try to stop him.”

Austin played for a number of non-league teams, including Poole Town, Kintbury Rangers and Hungerford Town before making the switch to Swindon Town just four years ago.

His rise has been a meteoric one ever since and Freedman, a self-confessed fan of the 23-year-old, hopes a few of his own hidden gems can follow suit.

“He’s a player who you have got to give a pat on the back to, because he has come up the leagues,” said the Wanderers boss.

“One day, hopefully for the guy, he’ll play in the Premier League.

“We’re trying to do that here. We’ve brought in players like Cian Bolger from Leicester reserves and Jan Gregus from Banik Ostrava so far and they’re young kids with a hunger and desire.

“That’s what it is about.

"I believe Craig Davies is like that. I think he’s got nowhere near his potential but he understands his responsibility to be a top professional.

"He can have that same desire. He’s been down and up a few times in his career, so hopefully he can be the same sort of case.”
