DOUGIE Freedman has vowed not to make any panic signings despite drawing a frustrating blank in his efforts to bolster Wanderers’ play-off push so far.

Enquiries for Fulham’s Kerim Frei and Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling have proved fruitless for the Whites in recent weeks, while rumours persist that Everton starlet Ross Barkley and Manchester City fringe man Scott Sinclair are still on the radar but currently being prevented from moving out on loan.

But while Freedman feels his squad would benefit from one or two extra signings before the March 28 deadline, he is loathe to rush into any deals. “Whether you think I’m right or wrong, I’m not one for making signings just to gee up the fans and see yourself up on Sky Sports,” he said. “What I like to do is bring in signings to try and paint a picture so that fans know where we are trying to go.

“It’s very difficult at this stage to get good players but we are trying. We are very close but when will these Premier League boys let them out? I don’t know yet, so we’ll just have to keep working on it.”

Freedman had hoped to have at least one new signing by the end of last week but the Whites boss reckons the calibre of player he is searching for has made the Premier League clubs involved more reluctant to allow them out on loan.

Brendan Rogers has spoken publicly about a handful of Championship clubs – Wanderers included – having enquired about England international Sterling, but the Liverpool boss has stated in no uncertain terms that he will not be allowed to leave Anfield.

It is understood that he would be willing to do business with attacking midfielders Suso or Jonjo Shelvey, but Wanderers are currently on the lookout for a wide man or a striker to add goals to their repertoire.

With just over a week to go before the deadline Freedman says he will keep working hard to bring in some fresh faces. While the Scot thinks his current squad are still capable of embarking on an unbeaten run and gatecrashing the top six in the final eight games, he believes their cause would be helped with a couple of new names.

“It won't be the end of the world (if the club do not make a signing) because we have got a very good squad. You just need a little bit of help at times,” he said.

“Chungy has played a lot of games, Eagles has done the same, and David. I think if they could get that bit of rest – even start a game and come off after 70 minutes it would make a big difference.”
