OWEN Coyle is keen to tie two of his most experienced campaigners down to longer contracts.

Both Jussi Jaaskelainen and Kevin Davies are currently in the process of discussing new deals, which would keep them at the Reebok beyond next summer.

It is understood that Jaaskelainen is close to signing a new two-year contract extension, taking him to 2014, while negotiations with Davies have also been going on since the end of last season.

And Coyle claims both players remain a major part of his plans for the club.

“Contract negotiations are something that the chairman tends to deal with,” he said. “But it’s fair to say there are clearly players that I want to keep at this football club.

“We’ll do the best by them, and by the club, but I believe that both of those players would love to stay here. I’d certainly want them to as manager.

“Those discussions are always ongoing and when we’ve got something concrete to say on it, we will.”

Jaaskelainen, who has been with the club for 14 years, signed his last contract in 2008 to end major speculation that he was to leave Wanderers.

The Finnish number one, who turned 36 earlier this year, has held off the challenge of Ali Al-Habsi – who will join Wigan Athletic this week – and is closing in on Eddie Hopkinson’s club record of 578 appearances.

Whites skipper Davies signed a one-year extension in the summer of 2009 and is one of several outfield players in the final year of their contract.
