IT had been a club record 29 games since Wanderers could reflect on a draw – but Owen Coyle believes he should have been waiting at least another week.

After seeing his former Burnley charge Steven Fletcher head a 48th-minute equaliser, the Whites boss was upset that his defenders had not heeded a pre-match warning about the Scot’s aerial prowess.

And while Coyle questioned the legitimacy of the free-kick that led to Fletcher’s goal, he admitted his side – Sam Ricketts and Jussi Jaaskelainen in particular – should have been better prepared.

“I had shown the lads the VT (videotape) of Steven Fletcher, who is a player I know well,” he said.

“I brought him to the country for £2.5million and Burnley sold him for £7m. He is a talented player and he’s terrific at pulling on to that far post.

“We’re delighted that Sam (Ricketts) came in and played at the level he did, but I think he was so enthusiastic that he went to win the ball, and whether it’s a foul or not . . . well. But we do need to defend it a bit better. Jussi (Jaaskelainen) should have been asking for a higher line so we’re in a position to defend it better.”

Coyle was not entirely disappointed with a point, claiming his side’s second-half resilience had been a step forward.

“It was there to be won in the second half and we did have some good chances,” he said. “Each goalkeeper made some decent saves, but we still feel we could have won it.

“We ended up with a point when we wanted all three – but the way the game went, we might have lost that a few weeks ago, so there were pleasing aspects.”

Blackburn’s victory over Manchester United had heaped the pressure on to get a result against Wolves, but Coyle didn’t pay any attention to the result in the build up to the game.

“Whatever anyone else does is up to them,” he said.

“No none would ever have imagined that Blackburn would go to Manchester United and beat them, but they did.

“If we don’t gather points, it doesn’t matter what happens elsewhere. It’s as simple as that.

“If you take it in isolation, four points from the last three games would probably be all right.

“We don’t think it is, because we could have achieved more than that.

“It’s an honest assessment.”
