OWEN Coyle does not blame the fans for calling for his head during Saturday’s 3-1 defeat at Hull City.

Wanderers have claimed just one win out of their first five in league and cup and are currently well behind schedule in their planned pursuit of promotion.

Frustration boiled over at the KC Stadium, where travelling supporters watched their team lose an early lead to sink without a trace in the second half.

And the sentiment was not lost on Coyle, who also spoke with angry fans as he left the stadium. “We had a great travelling support again, and I’m absolutely gutted for them,” he said.

“They travel in numbers. We have a terrific football club here and the fans are the biggest part of that. All I’d tell them is keep supporting the club as you always do.

“Of course they are frustrated. I heard what was said, and I’m not a fool that ignores that as well, but they have opinions because they support this club through thick and thin. And that is up to them. The only way we can change them is by winning games.”

Despite being backed by the majority, even after relegation, it now appears a growing section of the support is calling for change at the top. But Coyle remains convinced he can turn round results.

“Any defeat you get after relegation feeds negativity and as a manager I accept that total responsibility,” he said.

“Everyone knows my feelings for the football club – I love it and always will – but these people support it through thick and thin, pay their money to be vocal and get right behind the team.

“We certainly know the target. To win automatic promotion you need to average two points from every game and as it stands right now we’ve got four, needing a minimum of eight.

“That tells you we’re well off that target and that the result against Hull means we have passed up a chance to be there or thereabouts.

“From my part there is anger and frustration, but as a manager, you have to accept that you are the one that fans are going to have to vent their anger on.

“I’ve never shirked that issue and I never will.”
