WANDERERS will be an altogether more attractive prospect to watch next season — if Gary Megson gets his way in the summer transfer market.

As club skipper Kevin Davies predicted in The Bolton News yesterday, the Whites boss is planning to bring more creativity to the squad in order to promote a more attacking brand of football.

The manager came under fire at times last term for what he confessed were some “dour, grinding performances”. But he believes by signing the right players over the next two months — Sporting Lisbon midfielder Miguel Veloso, pictured, being one target — he can add some style while maintaining the substance that ensured a 13th-placed finish.

“We’ve got to put emphasis on the quality of players we bring in,” Megson said.

“I would like to change the style that we play as I felt that was one of the reasons that the club struggled last season.

“We’ve had to take it back a little bit, get the results at times and not play in the way that we would have liked.

“There have been some really good performances, but some really dour, grinding performances, where we’ve got results, but it was all about getting those results and then, hopefully, using this summer to bring in players who can play a different type of game while still getting the results and, hopefully, getting more of them.”

Megson was frustrated in his efforts to boost his squad considerably in the January window, bringing only one permanent signing — Mark Davies from Wolves — and losing Kevin Nolan to Newcastle United.

He remains optimistic, however, of greater success in the forthcoming window, which opens on July 1.

“During the last transfer window, we wanted it to be a lot busier,” he admitted.

“But January is a really difficult time to sign players, transfer window or not, because most clubs want to hold onto their players and want a good finish to the season. Either they’re going for the Premier League or Europe or indeed trying to stay out of the Championship, so it’s not a very good time to be looking to bring players in.

“Despite that, we managed to bring Mark Davies in, which we were really pleased about.

“The serious work, I feel, in the most important window, is going to be this one that’s upcoming. I think there has been a job done now of letting players go but we now need to make sure the emphasis is really on bringing them in to help us push on.”

The most ambitious of all Megson’s targets remains Portugal international Veloso, who according to reports can now count Manchester City and Arsenal among his many admirers.

England seems like the obvious destination for the 23-year-old, although Wanderers would be reluctant to enter into a bidding war with their Premier League rivals.

The Bolton News understands, however, that Argentine playmaker Lucas Biglia is not a target, despite recent stories linking him with a move to the Reebok.
