Currently 820 of Bolton’s 1,104 restaurants, pubs, takeaways, sandwich shops and mobile caterers hold a four or five star hygiene rating with 509 receiving the highest rating.

The hygiene standards of these food outlets were ranked “good” or “very good”.

That means four out of five eateries are good or very good — and around half have the very top rating.

It comes as The Bolton News reveals the hygiene ratings for every takeaway in the borough.

Cllr Hilary Fairclough, Bolton Council’s executive cabinet member for regulatory services, said: “The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme helps consumers make informed choices about where they buy food.

“When a business gets a low rating we use enforcement powers to serve a notice of improvement and robustly monitor any business that falls below standard. We will not hesitate to close premises if we find there is a risk to public health.

“The council is always keen to work with businesses across the borough to ensure a high rating on their next inspection.”
