JASON Kenny’s parents would be ‘extremely proud’ for their son to become a ‘Sir’ as calls for the Bolton cyclist to be knighted gather pace.

The Farnworth Flyer beat team-mate Callum Skinner 2-0 in the men’s sprint to join fellow cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins and rower Sir Steve Redgrave on five Olympic gold medals in total.

And the 28-year-old has an opportunity to join Sir Chris Hoy on six gold medals and emulate the Scot's achievement of three golds at one games by winning tomorrow’s keirin.

While Jason’s dad, Michael Kenny, said a peerage would be very welcome, he was feeling relaxed about Jason’s final race and the family were not getting ahead of themselves.

“We’ve been in contact with Jason, but only to congratulate him,” said Michael.

“The keirin race is a bit unpredictable with six or seven big strong individuals travelling at 40mph plus, bouncing off each other.

“If he wins that’s great, but the pressure is off for his family because he’s already achieved so much.”

Farnworth cyclist Jason Kenny becomes 5-time Olympic champion with individual sprint victory at Rio 2016

Regarding the mounting calls for a knighthood, he added: “Obviously we would all be extremely proud, but at the end of the day it’s not our decision.”

Kenny, who beat Russian Denis Dmitriev 2-1 en route to the final, said: “People keep saying I have won five but I don't feel any different from the other day when I only had three. It's not sunk in yet.

"It's a nice club to be part of - but I'll just keep my head down and concentrate on the keirin."

Kenny won team sprint gold in Beijing, London and Rio - with Skinner and Phil Hindes on Thursday - and has now successfully defended the individual sprint title he won four years ago.

Kenny's only defeat in Olympic competition was in 2008, when Hoy beat him in the sprint to become the first Briton in 100 years to win three golds at the same games.

Now Kenny, world keirin champion in 2013, could repeat the feat, but the event which begins behind a motorised derny bike is something of a lottery.

He added: "I am really hit and miss. I know I could come and I could win it, I could get a medal, but I could also come and bomb out in the first round."

Bolton has won more gold medals than Brazil - Twitter reacts to Jason Kenny's 2nd win at Rio Olympics

Kenny is engaged to fellow Olympic champion cyclist, Laura Trott, and the couple now have eight Olympic gold medals between them.

Calls have been increasing for Kenny to receive a knighthood since his team sprint teammate, Philip Hines, raised the prospect following their gold medal winning race last week.

Meanwhile, it has also been pointed out that Bolton has won more gold medals at the Olympics than the whole of Brazil combined.

Others have joined in the fun online.

The North West Motorway Police tweeted: “Jason Kenny just been stopped for speeding on M6, issued with a large pat on the back, awesome, proud to be British.”

Kenny’s gold against Skinner also marked a national, as well as individual milestone – it was Great Britain’s 250th gold medal in the history of the summer Olympics.
