A cricket club has hosted a successful fundraising event, raising hundreds of pounds for victims of the Turkey earthquakes victims.

Deane and Derby Social Cricket Club organised the occasion in conjunction with charity, Friends For You, which will be on the ground in Turkey in the coming weeks to deliver aid.

With food stalls, art, face painting, henna and a climbing wall set up on Sunday, the Chelsea Road club was heaving with families enjoying the mild weather with a barbeque.

Leader of the event, Ibrahim Kala, said: “It’s been a great turnout and the weather was pleasant.

The Bolton News:

“There’s been lots of kids running around, playing football and going on the climbing wall.

“We did it to show a bit of solidarity with the people affected and get the community together.

“We’ve also been through some tough times, so we’re also having a bit of fun and helping others.”

Since the earthquake in Turkey, thousands of people have lost loved ones and homes.

The club also want to make people aware of the space and green fields available to the whole community of Bolton and encourage people to attend events.

Mr Kala said: “We had a winter market last year and it was a massive event so we knew we could do it again.

“It’s also great for local businesses who have been showing their support for the event.”

The club has been on the site since 1983 and want to open the club to residents.

Mr Kala said: “It’s not just a place where men play cricket, we have fitness classes and arts and crafts for kids.

“There’s a lot more things we are going to be putting on to turn it into a community hub for people in the area.”

Turkish food was also being served on the day such as delicious traditional baklava.
