A historical walking club which has been going for 100 years, has challenged people to ‘step up’ and join its ranks.

Bolton HF Walking Club wants new members as it prepares for more walks through scenic areas as the days become longer for the summer.

Walks have included visits to Bolton by Bowland, and even a Daffodil Walk and much more.

Organisers have praised the benefits, including how regular walks keep people fit and healthy and have the power to improve members well-being.

Former president of the club Hazel Markland said: “We are a very sociable and friendly group.

“It’s a great way to meet new people and make friends.

“Of course, all our walks are within striking distance of a cafe or pub, so people can enjoy a convivial drink or a cup of tea after walking.”

She said that the club currently has about 260 members but some of those are social members who are not necessarily able to walk regularly.

Hazel added: “There are no age restrictions.

The Bolton News:

“We welcome people of all ages- we have some members who are in their 30s and 40s - but we find people approaching retirement age thinking about what they might do with their time when they stop working often find our activities appealing.”

The club organises a range of walks on a weekly basis for all abilities, with some more challenging than others.

All the walks are led by a member guide who knows the route.

On Wednesdays, there are four walks between five, 10 and 15 miles.

A fifth walk happens in the warmer months around 2-3 miles, ending with a lunch.

On Saturdays, there is a walk of between six and seven miles and another on Sundays between seven and 10 miles.

Between the months of May and August on Thursdays there is a walk of between five and six miles in the evening.

Hazel added: “We like to encourage people of all ages to come to the Thursday evening walks to encourage them to come on the daily walks when they stop working.”

During the year, there are several social events for Bolton HF members.

There is the annual dinner at Horwich’s Ridgemont House, an annual Sunday Lunch at Bolton’s Old Links Golf Club, a ceilidh dance at the Ukrainian Club in Bolton.

There are also three coach trips and an annual walking holiday at one of the HF hotels.

Everyone is welcome to join the club for a walk a couple of times before becoming a member.

Membership costs only £12 per year.
